Spring Break SIPA Style COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog

Spring Break SIPA Style COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog When we were in college, spring break meant lying on the beach drink in hand (Cancun or Acapulco was often the destination of choice), reading Vogue (GQ for the guys out there) and delightfully indulgent tabloids, and working on bronzing your Vitamin D deficient skin. Now that we’re in graduate school at SIPA, things are slightly different. We have traded in those carefree beach days for capstone work trips. That’s right folks, many of us are heading into the field over the next week to work on our semester-long projects in places like Honduras, Tanzania, Jordan, Kosovo and India. Many of you may think we would be despondent over this change. No more drinks with tiny umbrellas in a beautiful locale? But truthfully, these capstone trips are far better than any spring break of our undergraduate days. The fulfilling work we do overseas furthers our understanding of international affairs and development, and many of the trips have a sightseeing component as well (The Tanzania kids are off to Zanzibar and we think that’s very cool). Many SIPA students not traveling for their capstone project over spring break are still taking advantage of the school’s extracurricular options. The Japanese Student Association is hosting a trip to Tokyo, and the Arab Student Association is organizing a Moroccan adventure that includes stops in Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, and Tangier. And of course, though they are few and far between, there are those among us that are opting for Cancun.

Comparisson of Mother Tounge and Everyday Use - 1417 Words

Edgar Hernandez Professor Ali ENC 1102 March 20, 2014 Amy Tans, â€Å"Mother Tongue† and Alice Walkers â€Å"Everyday Use† both share similar traits in their writings of these two short stories. â€Å"Mother Tongue† revolves around the experiences Tan and her mother had due to her mothers English speaking limitations, she also revolves her story around the relationship of a mother and daughter. Alice walker on the other hand writes a story narrated by â€Å"Mama† the mother of two daughters Maggie and Dee and explains the conflicting relationship she has with Dee, both writers similarly emphasize on the relationships these mother and daughter characters had and they unravel both short stories based on these relationships. Although both short stories†¦show more content†¦Bother writers also use different point of views. Tan speaks from first person point of view telling her story as Walker narrates through â€Å"Mama† the mother of both daughters. The opposing points go further t han writers point of view, the short story Mother Tongue truly represents Amy Tans love and passion for her mother as well as her writing. Walker’s story tells more of a daughter who despite been given everything, yet has turned into a undesirable human being and a daughter who in some ways looks down on her mother and sister. In Alice Walkers â€Å"Everyday Use† she uses a tactic to set a mood for the reader by bringing in the character Maggie. Walkers use of language when describing Maggie creates a picture of a physically scarred and unintelligent girl. Maggies physical scarring is pointed out to the reader early in the story to convey the feeling of sympathy. Walker accomplishes this when she states that Maggie has, burn scars down her arms and legs (Walker 272). Tan also does this in a vaguely way when she writes â€Å" My mother has long realized the limitations of her English as well† which also helps convey the feeling of empathy to the character. The w riters also focus on different point in their stories. â€Å"Mother Tongue† focuses on the prejudices of Amy and her

Analysis of The Practice of Leadership Authored by Jay A Conger and

Essays on Analysis of The Practice of Leadership Authored by Jay A Conger and Ronald E Riggio Book Report/Review ï » ¿Book Report Table of Contents Introduction 2 Selection of the Topic 2 Selection of the Book 3 Summary 4 Primary View 4 Identification of Two Words 5 Linkage 6 Take Away 6 Meeting with the Author 7 Conclusion 9 Reference 10 Bibliography 11 Introduction ‘The Practice of Leadership: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders’ authored by Jay A Conger and Ronald E Riggio has been an immensely successful book in the domain of management with special emphasis on the function of leadership. The book, published from John Willey and Sons in the year of 2007, has considerable influence upon my understanding of the subject. This report deals with the various facets of the book. Selection of the Topic ‘Leadership’ is one of such topics that attract me because of its special attributes. To become a successful manager, one needs to be a good leader. It is my desirousness that I would be a successful manager and can train the subordinates as they also can become successful in their fields and ultimately can successfully achieve the organisational targets and goals. It demands to build a leadership quality in me. I understand that the quality of leadership can not be built up externally as it is an in-born quality but with the changing global scenario one must keep himself updated and should learn the latest techniques which can sharpen the leadership qualities. Self- assessment is the best technique to take decision on any issues related with oneself and I also followed the same. On doing so, I found that I have an inherent quality to organise a group, understand the requirements of the group members and solve their problems. I have identified this quality while work as a team leader in different projects. Therefore, in order to update myself and to become more effective in this respect, I had chosen this interesting topic of leadership. Selection of the Book Being a student and not an expert in the corporate world, I was searching for such a book which would be easy to understand and from where practical experiences can be drawn. Standing at the edge of the corporate world, these practical experiences will help me to understand the requirement of the industry. ‘The Practice of Leadership: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders’ by Jay A Conger and Ronald E Riggio resolves all my queries and fulfils the requirements. After searching few other books, I had found â€Å"The Practice of Leadership† to suit best for accumulating the ideas and practices of leadership from the experts of this field. The entire book had been written in much organised way and an easy format. I would like to share the names of few other books such as â€Å"Leadership Power Plays† and â€Å"Leadership without Easy Answers† as I considered these books too for the purpose of selection. But I found that both these books were unable to cover the every small issue of leadership development that the selected book has done with practical exposures. Another most important issue of choosing this book has been that apart from describing the traditional factors of leadership such as task, capabilities of leader, the authors also provided great emphasise to describe the requirements of leadership as the unique demand of the present world. Summary This book has been organised in four parts. The four parts include leadership development and selection, task and capabilities of leaders, leadership of organisation and leadership requirement of the unique demands of today’s world. The book shows that all the leaders can not be equally effective and they would not possess similar skills. It indicates that leadership is the process of determining one’s hidden talent and utilise it to face the organisational challenges. According to the authors, the focus of the organisation should be on the core competence rather than various competencies and should try to build up the leaders who will able to meet the strategic challenges and the process is expected to produce the future leaders too. Primary View According to me, the book is not directly about the planning, organising, staffing, coordinating, motivating, leading, or controlling but in few of the areas, the book provides emphasis on the selection of the leaders which can be linked with the staffing. Even developing the leadership skill also requires proper planning. The portion of the task of the leader can also be summarised as organising a group and then motivating them to reach at their goal along with co-ordinating and controlling the subordinates through out the process. Therefore, it can be said that the book indirectly and secondarily focuses on these factors but not in very specific sense. Identification of Two Words One of the two words is that of ‘Affirmative Action’. It refers to a hiring policy. It required analysing the entire workforce with respect to the protected classes. This protected class can be the minorities also. This action indicates the preferred treatment to these classes through removing the discriminatory employment practice (Infinity Internet. No Date). The sentence can be as follows: ‘Every organisation should implement affirmative action to fulfil the commitment towards the internal customer as well as the community also’. Another word is ‘Tapestry’. The word implies an outward appearance of textile art, woven on a vertical appearance. The sentences using this word can be the following: â€Å"In earlier days, kings use to send the tapestries by rolling it up to their intimate ones’ †. Linkage In the book, ‘The Practice of Leadership: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders’, one human resource tool had been described to analyse the selection of the leaders namely the ‘360 Degree Feed Back Process’. It is also used for performance appraisal. 360 Degree Feedback Process means the feedback for selecting leaders should be taken from each and every stakeholders of the company irrespective of upward or down word communication. This tool is very effective in this manner as the leader should be the one who will be accepted by all the subordinates and the employers. This topic is also discussed in the class room even various journals on this topic has also been referred. Take Away The three most prominent ‘take-aways’ from ‘The Practice of Leadership: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders’ by Conger and Riggio have been the following: Take Away I: I believed that leaders are inborn and not much formal guidance is needed to sharpen their skills but after reading the book, I recognised that there is a need of leadership development. In born qualities are not enough for it. The corporate leaders or the executives need to change their self according to the changing environment to meet the strategic challenge. Take Away II: I never know that a leader could be selected through the 360 Degree Feed Back Process. I had a perception that leaders always come to frontline by exhibiting their leadership quality in their day-to-day activities and get recognised accordingly. The concept of taking feedback through the questionnaires completely changed my notion in this regard. Take Away III: I did not possess any idea regarding the partnership of coaching and the ‘Go It Alone’ process. The book helped me to understand that the executive, the organisation and the coach are three partners and all of them are responsible for the improvements of the executives and that of the entire organisation. Meeting with the Author The authors stated that any organisation should focus on the core competency and should strive to produce leaders to meet the strategic challenges. I could not totally agree with the authors in this regard. I presume the leadership development process should focus more on selecting the best person at the beginning of the process as they can focus on producing the future leaders among the subordinates and provide them training to identify the strategic challenges and take preventive actions against all shortcomings. If I could meet the authors personally, I would have surely sought their clarification in this regard. Conclusion Despite the above mentioned dis-agreement with the authors, it should be acknowledged that the book ‘The Practice of Leadership: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders’ has been a great help for me to understand the various domains and segments of leadership and I am sure it would help me in my corporate exposure by considerable extent. Chris Evans launching of “The Terry and Gaby Show” on Five in 2003 Free Essays

Chris Evans launched â€Å"The Terry and Gaby Show† on Five in 2003, in an attempt to compete with ITV’s â€Å"This Morning†. In less than a year it had been axed. Looking in detail at an episode from each show, identify the codes and conventions of the daytime TV genre, and suggest why â€Å"The Terry and Gaby Show† failed to dent the popularity of â€Å"This Morning†. We will write a custom essay sample on Chris Evans launching of â€Å"The Terry and Gaby Show† on Five in 2003 or any similar topic only for you Order Now After looking at each of the episodes I found that the presenters in each one were quite the same. In both of the shows they have a man and a woman presenter and in both of the shows they seem very chatty and friendly. I think that in TAGS the presenters (Terry and Gaby) are better known and also have been in lots of different shows working together in the past. I think this shows that they should be able to work together very well and this should help the show, but as they know each other well it could make them more relaxed and so this could spoil it slightly as they talk to each other rather than the audience. In both of the shows the presenters are smiley and happy which is good because this should help people be more relaxed watching the show. It also makes it more personal to the people watching. For TAGS I think the presenters are more well known and more famous they are well known for some of the shows they have been in and this could make people more likely to watch it. In TM the presenters talk to the audience more rather than talking to each other, which will definitely help the show but the presenters of TM (Fern and Philip) are not as well known and not as famous so people might rather see TAGS. I think that the presenters have nothing to do with TAGS being axed. I feel that the conventions for daytime TV presenters are that they have to be chatty, happy and friendly. Terry and Gaby are well known for being in lots of shows but most of the shows they are in are similar. In all of the shows they are in they are smiley happy and chatty which is the same in TAGS. This is probably why they were chosen for the show in the first place. You haven’t really differentiated the presenters in terms of their brand image†¦ they are not identical! PH There are lots of different types of items featured on daytime TV the conventions for daytime TV are Celebrity news and interviews, real life stories, Gossip/News and competitions. In TAGS they had all of this stuff but their celebrities were not as famous as in TM. I think this is mainly because TM had been Going for much longer and so was more known in the celeb world this means more famous celebrities are more likely to agree to be on TM because it was more well known. In the episode of TAGS we watched the celeb they interviewed was mostly just on the show so he could advertise another show which was coming on channel5. In the episode of TM we watched they had a different variety of celeb’s interviewed which could be another reason it was more popular than TAGS. In TAGS the competition prize was just a DVD player and the competition was very easy to answer they probably did this so that more people would ring with the answer witch would give them more money and as it was easy it would attract more viewers. This obviously didn’t work which is probably because the prize was not as good either. In TM the competition was harder to get but the prize was a holiday, which is much better than TAGS and could have helped them get more viewers. I think that the competitions didn’t have much to do with TAGS getting axed. For both of the shows They had someone on who spoke about celeb news and gossip and a bit of normal news. I think that in TM it was much more informative and detailed and in TAGS it was much more comedy rather than real news and information. I think they mainly did this because they were trying to target a younger audience by making it more up beat and new. They tried to do this by putting in things to encourage young student viewers as well as the older generation. TM is more targeted at an older generation because they have things In to appeal to older people. I think that TAGS made a mistake by doing this because it is more likely that people who are older are going to be watching a daytime TV show so this could have been one of the main reasons TAGS got axed. The conventions for the title sequence for a daytime TV show are loud cheery music, colourful and light settings and just some thing happy and jolly. The title sequences for both of the shows are very different; in TAGS it shows Terry and Gaby on their way to work and shows the way they are travelling. It shows that Terry is on a bike and is cycling to work and Gaby is being driven to work in a posh car she goes in the back of the television centre and Terry goes through the back. In TM it has different coloured squares running along the screen some of these have different clips from the show, some have different relaxing objects in them and some just have colour. Both of these are very colourful and bright and both have very happy cheery music in but they both are very different. For TM I think that it has a better title sequence because firstly it has better more catchy music that everybody likes but in TAGS the music is cheery but a bit boring and only some audiences would have liked it. I think that this could have been one of the reasons that TAGS got axed because people might have seen the title sequence and then thought that the show was not for them. I think that the set in TM is much more calm and relaxing which is good because in daytime TV it should be relaxing so they can relax from whatever job they are doing and sit down and not have to watch anything to bright and confusing. For TAGS the set is very bright and up beat and much more colourful. I think it is the convention of daytime TV to have a very bright set and to have it set up like someone’s living room with a sofa to make it look more homely. I think that the set for TM is much more relaxing and homely and that in Tags it is a bit too bright and colourful. This could have defiantly put people of watching the show. In TAGS They have a studio audience unlike TM who haven’t. I think that TAGS having an audience is good because it includes the viewer more because there are normal everyday people on the TV too but it is also good for TM not to have an audience because it means their wont be any background noises or laughs at the wrong time which could annoy people. Rather vague, little use of media terminology (Mise-en-scene etc). PH By Sam Iles Sam, you have not properly addressed the points I raised from your first draft. Detailed examples are lacking (no mention of specific guests), nor do you make much reference to media concepts or theory (celebrity brands, mise-en-scene). You do identify some of the codes and conventions of the genre and engage in some limited analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of each text. How to cite Chris Evans launching of â€Å"The Terry and Gaby Show† on Five in 2003, Papers

The Cause Of Evil Macbeth Essay Example For Students

The Cause Of Evil Macbeth Essay Macbeth, once a noble and courageous warrior is transformed into an egotistical and ruthless tyrant. In the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, Macbeth encounters a transformation which brings him the crown, as well as his death. However, this transformation reached the point it did because three motivational factors. Throughout the tragedy the Three Witches (along with the prophecy), Macbeth’s himself, and Lady Macbeth were motivational factors that manipulated Macbeth into committing murder and treason. Although it is Macbeth who is at blame for his actions, it is these three motivational factors that caused him to complete those actions. If it were not for these people, Macbeth might have taken a different path and could have continued to be the gracious and admirable warrior that he once was. The Three Witches were a major influencing factor in Macbeth’s demise. The Three Witches were the birth of Macbeth’s transformation. They were the ones who told Macbeth the prophecy; the prophecy that seemed to have sparked Macbeth’s evil wrath, â€Å"All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! / All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! / All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter! † (1. 3. 51-53). We will write a custom essay on The Cause Of Evil Macbeth specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now After receiving this prophecy, Macbeth starts to transform into an evil man who will not let anything stand in his way. In addition, the Three Witches use the apparitions to motivate Macbeth. They fool Macbeth and lead him to believe that he should not worry. In conclusion, it was the Three Witches who started the whole ordeal and continued to provoke Macbeth into committing such barbaric murders. However, they were not the only ones involved in Macbeth’s transformation. Although the Three Witches played a part in Macbeth’s transformation, it was Macbeth himself who kept reassuring himself. Macbeth took the prophecies that he received and turned them into his own personal reassurance: Bring me no more reports. Let them fly all. / Till Birnam Wood remove to Dunsinane/ I cannot taint with fear. What’s the boy Malcolm? / Was he not born of woman? The spirits that know/ All mortal consequences have pronounced me thus:/ ‘Fear not, Macbeth. No man that’s born of woman/ Shall e’er have power upon thee’†¦ (5. 3. 1-7). Macbeth would develop a false sense of security, which lead him to believe that he was invulnerable. He would act as if his throne could not be threatened and that he had nothing to worry about, when however he was under great danger of being backstabbed by his once loyal friends. Furthermore, Macbeth creates a false sense of mind and forces himself to believe that the words of the Three Witches are true. Macbeth’s incorrect conclusions formed from the apparitions and his own interpretation of the prophecy, lead to his ruin. Macbeth’s greatest cause of his destruction was the one he held dearest to him, Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth questions Macbeth’s manhood in an attempt to manipulate him into doing things that she wants. For instance, when Macbeth is questioning whether or not he should murder Duncan, Lady Macbeth fools Macbeth into thinking about how any real man would commit the murder: What beast was ‘t/ then,/ that made you break this enterprise to me? / When you durst do it, then you were a man;/ And to be more than what you were, you would/ Be so much more the man (1. 7. 53-58). This occurs in the play numerous times and it is a very affective motivator for his transformation. Lady Macbeth is very ruthless when it comes to accomplishing what she desires and that is obvious because of how she deceives Macbeth. .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039 , .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039 .postImageUrl , .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039 , .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039:hover , .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039:visited , .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039:active { border:0!important; } .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039:active , .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039 .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u507a08beff9553a9789c6aa28d010039:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Rise and Fall of Lady Macbeth EssaySecondly, Lady Macbeth exploits Macbeth’s ambition and ego. Even though it was Macbeth who carried out the crimes, they were the thoughts of other people. The Three Witches and Lady Macbeth influenced Macbeth. Macbeth was a loyal man who had a conscience but was made into a cold-hearted killer. The Three Witches were miserable women who desired the death and ruin of Macbeth. Moreover, Macbeth’s ambition and greed propelled him to destroy anyone who stood in the way of his success. Lastly, Lady Macbeth was a selfish woman who played Macbeth for a fool and used him to gain her fancies. The Three Witches, Macbeth’s own unchecked ambition and Lady Macbeth were the motivational factors which ultimately lead to the doom and destruction of Macbeth.

Red Skelton essays

Red Skelton essays We know him as Freddy the Freeloader, Clem Kaddidlehopper, Cauliflower McPugg and Dead Eye. His career spanned over fifty years and he conquered every entertainment medium from vaudeville to television. He is Red Skelton, whos remarkable skill to evoke emotional responses from laughter to tears from his audiences have marked him as one of the greatest and best loved comedians. In his biography of this great comedian, Arthur Marx captured the many and diverse aspects of Red Skelton. While he was a comedic clown on the outside, like many other comedians, Skeltons home life was anything but funny. Marx illustrates how Skeltons private life was full of tragedy, including the death of his only son from leukemia, the suicide of his wife, and his own near mental collapse. Marx says that through much of his life, Skelton was an unhappy and tormented individual, a sad and lonely man who trusted practically no one and who was as unreachable as a distant star. Skelton was the son of a circus clown was raised in poverty, he quit school at the age of seven and trouped in circuses, carnivals, and vaudeville theaters. Marx points out that his career began in his hometown of nearby Vincennes, Indiana. At age 10, he left his home to travel with a medicine show throughout the Midwest. He joined the vaudeville circus at age 15. Then at the young age of 17, Skelton married Edna Marie Stilwell, who later, even after their divorce, served as his manager and chief writer. Continuing the story of Skeltons career, Marx points out that Skelton made his debut on Broadway and radio in 1937 and on film in 1938 on the show Having Wonderful Time. At that time, known as Richard Skelton, he performed some of his own pieces such as a demonstration of how different people walk up and down stairs. That appearance, Marx says, may have been Skeltons big break. He was signed by MGM in 1940 to serve as comedy re ...

5 Alternate Candidates that Students Ask to Be Their Writing Tutors

5 Alternate Candidates that Students Ask to Be Their Writing Tutors 5 Alternate Candidates that Students Ask to Be Their Writing Tutors Writing tutors usually charge high fees that the average college student cannot afford. If you would like to hire a professional tutor, but simply do not have the money to spend, here are five options to consider. 1. Friends If you have a friend who is an excellent writer or enjoys writing papers, you can ask him/her to be your writing tutor. Perhaps, you are good at math so you can offer him/her math tutoring in exchange for writing help. Asking your friend for help is a good option because it is usually easier to work with someone you feel comfortable. In addition, your friend knows you and can probably figure out how to explain information in a way that makes sense to you. 2. Relatives If you have a cousin, aunt, grandparent, or sibling who excels at writing, they will most likely be willing to help you write a paper. Relatives will support you for free. If you aren’t sure who of your relatives is a good writer, try asking if someone would like to be your writing tutor. 3. Senior Student Another good idea is to hire a senior student, preferably one who has already graduated from the university. This person will consult you on how to write papers successfully on the specific subject or for the particular professor. He/she will do it much better than someone else. You may even ask for his/her own papers you can read for guidance. Most graduates work as tutors just after finishing the university in order to earn some extra cash, while they are unemployed. Of course he/she may charge you for tutoring, but the fee will not be as high as for a professional helper. 4. Professor Most professors have office hours, the time set aside for students to come to the professor’s office and ask their questions. So, when you have some troubles with paper writing you may feel free to ask your supervisor for help. It does not matter what kind of questions you have. Maybe you need some advice on topic selection, or you are wondering if your paper is organized appropriately. Take into account that you are not the only one who needs help, and your professor may speak to several other students at the same time. So, if you have decided to go there, it is better to plan what you want to ask, in order not to come there hundred times every day with only one question per time. Keep in mind that your professor is the one who will grade your paper, so they are often the best people to ask for advice. As well as professors also notice and appreciate students who take the time and efforts to attend office hours. 5.   Classmates If you have no relatives or no senior students to help you, you may ask your group mates if they have such people who help them with the assignments. Everyone knows that the best way to comprehend   the material is to explain it to other people. So, ask your classmates if anyone is aware of the issue you have faced. If there is one who knows it, he/she will help you for sure, as well as, if you are good at the questions other students ask, you may help them too. Even more, it is a great idea to organize a study group, where students can discuss all the tricky points sitting together in a room. Do not worry about not having enough money to afford a professional writing tutor. There are lots of great options that will fit into any budget!

Carbonated Drinks Industry Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Carbonated Drinks Industry - Case Study Example It is in this aspect that Coke is differentiated. Unlike other products intended for a specific market niche, Coke targets a wide market range - from the mass market to the high end segment. This is in line with the vision of former company president Robert W. Woodruff, that everyone on Earth consumed Coke. To limit the scope, this paper assesses Coke in the context of the carbonated drinks segment in the UK. It evaluates the supply conditions given the prevailing market structure and competition among softdrink suppliers. Furthermore, this paper discusses the barriers to entry and political or social factors impacting the industry. It also considers the factors that drive demand, prospects in the carbonated drinks segment given changing demand trends and potential entry of new players. The 5-billion UK carbonated drinks market has more than adequate supply of carbonated drinks (The UK Softdrinks Market 2004). Notable colas include Coke; Pepsi Cola, Coke's major rival; Zamzam Cola, which is named after Mecca's holy spring; Virgin Cola, which is marketed under Sir Richard Branson's company; and Mecca Cola, which is promoted as Muslim people's alternative to US-made softdrinks. (McCaffrey 2005) In terms of market structure, the UK carbonated drinks sector may be character... Although there are numerous players in the industry, the cola drinks offered are differentiated depending on the preference of the market niche targeted (Gans, King, Stonecash & Mankiw pp.76-8). For instance, Mecca Cola is differentiated as it is advertised as the cola for Muslims. Bearing the catchphrase "No more drinking stupid, drink with commitment," (McCaffrey 2005) supplier creates a different brand that appeals to Muslim communities and their sentiments on Western culture. On the contrary, the UK carbonated drinks market may be classified as oligopolistic since it is dominated by few major suppliers. Quantitatively, oligopoly is derived by using the four-firm concentration ratio, measuring the percentage market share of the four largest firms in an industry (Samuelson & Nordhaus 2001 pp. 89-93). A ratio of beyond 40% generally renders the market as oligopolistic (Tirole 1988). According to Canadean, Coca-Cola Company alone has captured 45.3% of the market share of the UK carbonated softdrinks category in 2004. This indicates that the total market share of the two giant suppliers have gone above the threshold, thus, the industry may be deemed oligopolistic. Competition Unlike other oligopolistic industries wherein collusion of firms to raise prices is observed (Samuelson & Nordhaus 2001 pp. 89-93), Coca-Cola and Pepsi continue to battle each other in the marketing arena. Albeit their rivalry has spanned for almost a century, non-price competition has prevailed. These firms utilise extensive media mileage to compete with each other and foster brand loyalty. This is evidenced by the substantial allocation of firms for advertising cost. Instead of pricing, though the retail prices of Coke and Pepsi Cola do not substantially vary, they are observed to

Singapore's Macroeconomy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Singapore's Macroeconomy - Essay Example Singapore as a country is devoid of natural resources. In its foreign policy, Singapore has incorporated polices to strengthen its relation with the members of Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). Singapore also maintains a strong association with the United Nations Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC) to improve trade relations with Latin America and East Asia. So, from the very beginning, it had focused on the development of capital intensive methodologies for further growth (Australian Government, n.d.). The Nominal GDP of Singapore in the year 2012 was recorded as 276.52 billion dollars (International Monetary Fund, n.d.). This has even surpassed the prediction by IMF, which had forecasted the GDP to be around 270 billion dollars. Analysis of the country’s business cycle The GDP of the country is tabulated in the following table. Table 1: Real GDP of Singapore Year GDP current prices in US Dollars Growth Rate 2000 94.31 9.04 2001 87.70 -1.154 2002 90.64 4.202 2003 95.96 4.58 2004 112.70 9.159 2005 125.43 7.37 2006 145.75 8.764 2007 177.58 8.857 2008 189.96 1.701 2009 185.64 -0.98 2010 227.38 14.76 2011 259.85 4.889 Source: (Econ Stats, n.d.) The above table shows the GDP of Singapore at current prices in US Dollars. This paper has considered the GDP growth over the last ten years. The formula that has been used for the calculation of growth is: Rate of Growth of GDP in current year = (GDP value in current year – GDP value in base year)/ GDP value in year base year It can be clearly seen from the table that Singapore’s GDP has been following an upward trend throughout, except a little slump in 2009. The slump can be explained because of the adverse external environment in the World economy. Since then, the economy of Singapore has made a steady progress as can be seen from the rising trend in the GDP. Figure 1: Graphical presentation of GDP Source: (Authors creation) The graph above gives a visual representa tion of the GDP values. It can be seen from the figure that the economy of Singapore had faced a slump in the GDP growth in 2001. This is primarily because of the fact that the country went into recession in the middle of 2001. The chief reason behind this was the slower growth of the US economy, particularly in the electronic sector, which had slowed down the exports from Singapore to not only the US, but also the rest the European countries (Arnold, 2001). Since then, the economy of Singapore had shown a consistent performance. The main reason behind this exceptional growth was not the increase in total factor productivity, which had mainly driven the growth for other Asian countries. The root of growth and a stellar performance for the Singapore economy was the high level of capital accumulation. The growth can be mainly attributed to the mobilization of resources. The development strategies adopted by the government were strategic and vibrant which had mainly propelled the econo my to its growth. In a research conducted by Professor Vu he, it was found that the contribution of the capital-input in the growth process has been around 47%, while labor contributed to around 36% of

Elevating Man to the Level of God: Just Do It! :: Philosophy essays

Elevating Man to the Level of God: Just Do It! Deciding what to believe in was easy for Westerners before the Protestant Reformation. There was really only one option in the religion market-- Roman Catholicism. The Eastern Orthodox churches were also in existence for part of the pre-Reformation period, but they had a different geographical sphere of influence, so people in a given area had little choice of faith. The Church was a powerful force in more than people's spiritual lives; it was often involved in politics, science, art, and other secular affairs. Excommunication (exclusion from the Church) was one of the most severe punishments at that time. Before the Reformation, society was like a child. Children accept any beliefs that their parents hand them because they have no experience of their own to make judgements with. Children have no real sense of right and wrong. When they behave well, it is not out of virtuous impulses or a desire to "do the right thing," but out of fear of reprisal from their parents or an immature desire to please the people who have such a large amount of power over their lives. Finally, children need parents to tell them what to do so they don't burn their hands on the stove, drink Liquid Plumber or fall off a cliff and die. Pre-Reformation society was childlike in many ways, and Roman Catholic clergy were the parents to the pre-adolescent society. Religiously, people relied on the clergy to tell them how to act and what to believe, because they had never had to think about whether they agreed with the teachings of the Pope-- the thought of not agreeing never really entered their minds. When Martin Luther nailed his ninety-five theses to the door of the church in Wittenburg in 1517, he began more than he intended or even knew: intending to reform the Catholic church, he thrust wide open the door to freedom of thought and belief, which had been ajar since the Renaissance. With other religions in the market, people had to scrutinize what they had always been told and decide what they really believed. Some people retained their Roman Catholic beliefs, while others became Lutherans, Unitarians, Jehovah's Witnesses, Methodists, Baptists, Mormons, or joined with any of several hundred other Christian denominations. The division of the western Christian church, begun in 1517, is still continuing today.

NGN Migration

There is an urgent need that telecommunication services that are converged and qualitative be offered as this will pave way for the Next Generation Networks focusing on reducing the existing digital divide. NGN migration involves the process of changing the dormant cabinets to being active. This requires very accurate information on the local loop connectivity enabling the existing pairs to be rapidly copied from the existing frame to a new one and without erring. (Michael, 2001) Once the migration is completed without any service interruption any information concerning the quality of the pairs is very important in supplying the high-bandwidth services. Most carriers and service providers are looking for an aggressive improvement of their services and their migration to the New Generation Services Network. There is an intense competition which is continually eroding the profitability of most of the service providers majority of whom are transiting to IP.The NGN service providers thus need more inventive   joint infrastructures  Ã‚   that will improve the current services delivery. They should also provide a framework for solutions in the intelligence of the greater network. (Lee, Deborah, Kevin, and Sally, 2000) The carriers will not only have a short term relief through flexibility and incorporation but also their position in seizing other new market opportunities will be expanded. The solutions which are part and parcel of the Cisco IP NGN objectives encompass a wider transformation of both the entire businesses and the service providers. The IP NGN sanctions the service providers to meet all the customers’ needs more efficiently while providing a basis for delivering profit sustaining applications. Cisco IP NGM has created an intelligent infrastructure that opens opportunities for service providers so that they can offer more advanced and personalized media services over any other form of connection. Cisco strongly supports the NGN transition in relation to its conceptual planning and the network design. It also serves as a business partner supporting the service providers on the NGN migration. Cisco on the other hand assists the service providers in transforming their businesses and their networks. The transformation offers new value added services that help them increase their profitability and achieve greater efficiency. The IP NGM cannot be bought by the service providers since it evolves constantly adapting to its customers demands and opportunities in the new technology. However it is possible to still give speculations about the transformation. The NGM encompasses the service provider’s current and future services realizing the fact that the largest part of the growth will be in data and video services. Voice services will initially be significant in the service portfolio giving way to richer media services inclusive of video, voice and data. (Larry & Bruce, 2000) The shift towards NGN entails the service provider’s network as a whole since it not only concerns itself with bandwidth in network access but also in the delivery of an excellence bandwidth in the entire network. IP NGM is more about making significant changes to an individual network thus creating a single network for service deliveries. A regulators global symposium held in February 2007 laid down guidelines for NGNs migration with a goal of promoting frameworks that promote innovation, and a reasonably priced access to NGN.This took place in a three day meeting in Dubai during which   Ã‚  guidelines for telecommunications migration were laid down. The regulators designed a roadmap that would encourage frameworks that are regulated .The International Engineering Consortium experts gave an NGN definition as the blend between the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and the public switched data network (PSDN) as it also creates a multi service single network. An explanation was given that the switch infrastructures proprietary owned, the architecture for NGNs pushes for a central office functions to the network edge. The results are a network infrastructure that is well distributed leveraging open and new technologies therefore reducing the market entry cost and increasing flexibility as well as accommodate the packet-switched data and the circuit-switched data. (Ericsson, 2001) Other scholars similarly defined it as the future networks stimulated by the need to transport data and multimedia services through the same network having very flexible deployment and the capability to change various models in the economy for the best results. The telecommunications regulatory department globally that is in charge of the standardization also defined NGN as a network that is packet based with the potential to provide various telecommunication services and simultaneously making use of the multiple broadband. Practically speaking the NGN involves architectural changes which include the core network through the PSTN design and the cable and wire access.NGN encompasses transport networks as a core network with each built for a totally different service to become a single transport network which is oftenly based on either internet protocol (IP) or Ethernet. There is a specific definition between the network services running on the transports top and the connectivity ratio of the network. This indicates that when a new service is to be enabled by a provider this could be done by first directly defining the service layer without the consideration of the transport layer. Here the services are independent of any details pertaining transport thus increasing the applications that are independent of the network access through delayering of the application and the networks. The global symposium for the regulators was initiated in the year 2000with participants from all over the world as this year they centered on the NGNs migration. It focused on the roadmap to next generation’s networks and how they could achieve success at the same time promoting investment. The meeting also fully did an examination on the regulatory issues that are very urgent such as the NGNs interconnection, competition, universal access, consumer protection, investment and the global interconnection of the internet. According to the regulators secretary general the best practices were to be adopted offering a possible way of providing benefits to both the consumers and the service providers through reduced costs. They would also offer new and innovative services to the consumers. The guidelines also called upon the regulators to adopt regimes that can be subjected to regular checkups ensuring that competition barriers are eliminated. They were to ensure that both the users and the providers can easily migrate to other networks in the future when all the required market conditions are met. (Bennett, 2001) The regulators were ready to tailor the adopted practices in the world market as they were also urged in adopting flexible interconnection models that would allow a very smooth transition to the NGNs.They were also urged to maintain a playing field that is leveled thus protecting the interests of the consumers. The participants made an agreement that various steps were to be taken that the market did not suffer any form of competition distortion especially in the issue of convergence. There was also a risk that the providers of the NGN and the operators also were in a position to regulate the competition at the service level to their own advantage. The regulators were also cautioned to be on the look out monitoring any incidents requiring a regulatory response (Erick, 2001) The ITU director also gave an explanation that NGN was placed in-between thee internet and the telecom worlds thus bringing out a variety of issues to be handled by the regulators themselves. They were also encouraged to clearly define policies that would allow the IP networks and the legacy to co-exist offering a voice together. There should be a consideration put in place while making the obligations applicable to the providers and the operators of the telephony services not considering the service delivery to the consumers (Anders 2000) The issues pertaining the process of the NGNs migration are to be addressed with urgency for the formation of a high level co-coordinating committee consisting of the major key players in the industry. These key people are to all the issues relevant so that there is a there is a systematic and smooth transition from the existing networks to the NGNs.Various issues are to be handled by the committee formed so that they can create awareness for the NGNs building programme. They are also expected to put up a timetable for the NGN migration world wide.    References Anders A. What Is a Radula

The radula is a special structure used by many mollusks to scrape food off rocks, to feed off of plants or create depressions in rocks that the mollusk uses for habitat. The radula has many rows of tiny teeth that are replaced as they wear down. Each row of teeth consists of marginal teeth, one or more lateral teeth and a median tooth.   One animal that has a radula is the common periwinkle, which uses its radula to scrape algae off rocks for food. The limpet is a marine invertebrate that uses its radula to create a home by boring a shallow hole into a rock.

The most important lesson I feel I have learned from this course was in Week 1, when we discussed the value of keeping an open mind and viewing all aspects of a problem or situation from multiple perspectives versus limiting myself to my own perspective. Being able to apply what I have learned about creating strong arguments will make me more confident in writing research and persuasive papers for college. It will also undoubtedly assist me in any future career. We will write a custom essay sample on Final Reflection or any similar topic only for you Order Now I will be more able to confidently defend or argue my points of views and opinions in an unbiased way. This will, in turn, make me an overall better communicator. From the beginning of this course I have applied what I learned to the way I approached life in general and it has allowed me to better understand other people. Since Week 1, I have tried to implement what I learned from the â€Å"This Is Water† video ND I am happy to say it has already started to change my life for the better. Although I have always known it was best to view life In this way, PHI 103 has pushed me to be more aware of my thought processes. There Is a huge different between knowing or understanding something and putting it to practice. My goals are to keep increasing my awareness of other perspectives and to continue being objective upon approaching any argument. How to cite Final Reflection, Papers

Atrial Fibrillation and Asthma

Question: Discuss about theAtrial Fibrillation and Asthma. Answer: Introduction There have been several cases of patients initially diagnosed with asthma developing atrial fibrillation disease. However, the connection between the two conditions has not been established. The two conditions have however posed risks of other cardiac infections on the patients. Medical practitioners have however tried to link the two in relation to other individual characteristics of the patients. This paper explores the pathophysiology, care and treatment of the atrial fibrillation condition of Mr. Jones. Cardiprin consists of aspirin and glycine. DeMarco, et al (2014) explains that aspirin is considered the active component of this drug. The generic name of aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid (ASA).it belongs to a group of drugs known as analgesics, antipyretics, anti-inflammatories and platelet aggregation inhibitors. The mechanism of action is associated with the inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzyme (COX-1), which is the main enzyme involved in the metabolism of arachidonic, a precursor in the prostaglandins synthesis. Prostaglandins are important mediators in the pathogenesis of inflammation, fever, and pain. The platelet aggregation inhibition is achieved by the suppression of thromboxane A2. Thromboxane is produced in the same pathway as prostaglandins. Thromboxane A2 is responsible for platelet aggregation, and consequent coagulation. Mr. Jones has been diagnosed with atrial fibrillations. In this condition, an individual experiences a very fast heart rate. Prystowsky, Padanilam, and Fogel, (2015) explains that in pathological conditions where there is coagulation due to thrombosis in the blood vessels, the heart is overworked in an attempt to pump blood. Platelet aggregation leads to the formation of clots within the blood stream which clogs the blood vessels and consequently increases the heart rate which precipitates into arrhythmia. Hypertension he has may be as a result of the high resistance in peripheral vessels resulting from platelet aggregation. This medication is fashioned to reduce the fibrillation and hypertension. Additionally, it reduces the risk of myocardial infarction. Although it is important as a drug of choice, it has some side effects which should be considered in the course of treatment. There may be some effects in the gastrointestinaltract. Itmay cause vomiting, epigastric pain, and diarrhea. Most importantly it may cause corrosion and ulceration in the gastrointestinal tract. A prolonged use of the drug is associated with dizziness, headaches, and tinnitus. It is sometimes associated with allergic reactions such as skin rash, bronchospasm, and aspirin triad. Bronchospasm may he severe due to asthma hehas. Asa nurse care should be taken to ensure that Mr. Jones is not having portal hypertension, vitamin K deficiency or glucose 6 phosphate deficiencies. These conditions are contraindicated with aspirin administration (Chan,et al 2014). Pathophysiology of Atrial Fibrillation Atrial fibrillation is an unusually a very rapid heart rate. Atrial fibrillation happens when the upper assemblies of the heart, or atria, fibrillate. This implies they beat quickly and sporadically. Blood is not pumped productively to whatever is left of the body which may make you feel feeble or tired, or to encounter awkward heart sensations like a hustling or unpredictable pulse. Millar, et al (2016) in an attempt to describe the causes and symptoms of this condition, it is important to point out that people have theorized the disease to be having a genetic cause. Scientists argue that from the 29 genes associated with asthma, one is likely to cause AF. It has however remained difficult to establish the main cause since it also affects people who dont have asthma as well. Major symptoms include heart palpitations, exhaustion, and shortness of breath The diagnosis and treatment of AF may be done through several mechanisms such as; electrocardiogram, holter monitor, event recorder, stress test and use of long term monitoring devices. Mechanisms involved in the treatment of AF include; control and monitoring of the heart rate, anticoagulation therapies and cardioversion which involves delivering an electric shock. Implantation of defibrillators and surgery is important for certain stages of the infection like that of Mr. Jones. In conclusion, there are several risk factors that are likely to make the condition worsen in individuals who are suffering from AF. These include; high cholesterol in the blood, hypertension which Mr. Jones is currently suffering from, obesity, drug and substance abuse, some medications and lack of exercise. Treating atrial fibrillation is very important in the sense that individuals suffering from this condition are likely to suffer a stroke and myocardial infarction. The reason why this drug was administered to Mr. Jones is because it is used to treat frequently occurring ventricular fibrillation in patients which is related to Mr. Jones. This medicine can be administered for very long periods if needed (Lund, L. H. 2016)The reason behind its support is because it is mostly used to heal very serious illness and long term one ones. It is used to patients of high risk of cardiac deaths(Lochnan, H. A. 2014). Taking the health conditions of Jones, it is a long term illness the causes coming from the parents hence this drug effective at this point. Reddel, et al (2017) one of its benefit is that it is used to cure patients who used other medicines that didnt work at all. As soon as it is administered it starts working right away(Ciesek, S. 2014). The medicine is in solution and can be given orally. This medicine has its own side effects like the other medicines. This side effects include fever, Nausea and Hypertension (Chen, 2015). The other effects related to this is serious heart arrest, heart failure, also abnormality in liver functions, kidney failure, diarrhea and many more. Certain precautions should be made by the nurse in charge. One precaution is to clearly follow the dosage because failure to follow can cause effects like dizziness and fainting (Mc Adam, 2016). The doctor or nurse should be in direct contact with the patient because as this medicine is in use there are many symptoms that come with it and if they become more the patient Mr. Jones should see the nurse directly with immediate effect. January, et al (2014) explains that dabigatran and warfarin are anticoagulation agents. Anticoagulation agents work through three mechanisms they include: fibrinolytic agent, anticoagulation agents, and antiplatelet agents. Fibrinolytic agents work by degrading fibrin, an important protein in the coagulation process. It works by eliminating the clot. Anticoagulants inhibit clot formation thereby preventing progression of thrombosis. Antiplatelet drugs interfere with platelets adhesion or aggregation. This prevents the initial clot formation. Warfarin acts by inhibiting vitamin K synthesis. This leads to the inhibition of vitamin k dependent clotting factors. The anticoagulation effect occurs within twenty-four hours after administration of warfarin. The peak coagulation effect may be attained in twenty-fourhours. Ithas a very high protein binding hence very long halflife. Ithas a terminal half-life of one week. Its elimination depends on metabolism by cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver. There is very little eliminated in the urine Dabigatran acts by inhibiting thrombin. Thrombin is involved in the conversion of fibrin to fibrinogen. This prevents a development of athrombus. Itis an orally administered drug with the same efficacy almost the same as warfarin. Contrary to warfarin a correct dose does not need to be determined for each individual. And it does not need to be changed from time to time. Warfarin requires blood tests to be made frequently in order to change the doses as it happens. Dabigatran is mainly eliminated ion the kidneys. A kidney disease is likely to cause intoxication due to accumulation (Alonso,et al 2015) I would advise Mr. Jones to consider warfarin. Dabigatran is equally potent as warfarin and more advantageous as it does not require constant testing of the blood. However, Care should be taken since it is no possible to monitor its effect and its effects cannot be reversed as easily as warfarin. Bleeding disorders can be reversed in warfarin administration by administering vitamin K. Dabigatran also requires an acid medium for absorption. Aspirin which is also administered reduces acidity and thus may reduce its bioavailability and consequently the potency. Warfarin would be the best drug ofchoice. Itshould be ensured that he does not have a liver disease. According to Valdes and Lochnan, (2014) salbutamol inhaler is a drug prescribed for asthmatic patients. It is commonly referred to as a bronchodilator medicine since its mode of action is to relieve and to dilate the airways. This serves to helm asthmatic patients like Mr. Jones whose air passages constrict. The inhaler takes a few minutes and its effect lasts for several hours. The salbutamol inhaler is designed to relieve breathlessness. It however does not prevent breathlessness. Agarwal, et al (2016) salbutamol inhaler may cause challenges to Mr. Jones due to the fact that he has an irregular heartbeart, he is also likely to suffer from allergic reactions due to the use of dabigatrin and cardiprin. He is also having hypertension which may predispose him to other adverse effects. Jones ought to press the inhaler and breathe in the spray that is elicited. He is supposed to breath into the salbutamol inhaler about 3-5 times and then wait for a few minutes. If the inhaler does not work within minutes, he is supposed to seek help from a medical officer. Jones is also supposed to carry his inhaler every place where he goes to. It is highly recommended of him that he avoids smoking and associated behavior since it increases the risks of adverse effects. Some of the major side effects include headaches, shivering, nervous tension and muscle cramps especially since he has heart conditions. if the symptoms and side effects persist, he should seek medical attention as soon as possible. He is supposed to store his inhaler in a cool and dry place that is away from direct sunlight. It should however be near him always so that he may access it any time he needs it. If the inhaler does not seem to work properly even after using it for the maximum number of times, he should seek medical attention too. Conclusion In conclusion, it is important to recommend that Jones needs to be advised to avoid the risky behaviors that may predispose him to the infections. These may include behaviors such as drug abuse and lack of exercise. He is also required to visit the doctor regularly as a routine health practice and as a precaution that will prevent further worsening of his condition. References Agarwal, R., Khan, A., Aggarwal, A. Scarlet Essays - English-language Films, The Scarlet Letter

Scarlet Letter And Pearl I can remember about six years ago when I realized that my parents were going to be divorced. I never understood why something so horrible was happening to me. I resented my parents for putting me through so much pain. I later realized my parents were ending their marriage because my father had committed adultery. I hated my father and felt sorry for my mother. I never ever looked at my father the same. I see myself as having something in common with the character Pearl in the novel The Scarlet Letter. I was not born a bastard, but we both were forced with the awful word of adultery placed on our names. The Scarlet Letter is a book of much symbolism. One of the most complex and misunderstood symbols in the book is Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne. Pearl and Hester have a major conflict that in turns contributes to the meaning of the work. In The Scarlet Letter, Hester, for her sins, received a scarlet letter, "A" which she had to wear upon her chest. This was the Puritan way of treating her as a criminal, for the crime of adultery. Hester would walk through the streets, she would be looked down upon as if she were some sort of demon from Hell, that committed a terrible crime. This would give her much mental anguish and grief. On the other hand, God's treatment of Hester for her sin was quite different than just a physical token: he gave Hester the punishment of a very unique child which she named Pearl. This punishment handed down from God was a constant mental and physical reminder to Hester of what she had done wrong, and she could not escape it. In this aspect, Pearl symbolized God's way of punishing Hester for adultery. The way Hester's life was ruined for so long was the ultimate price that Hester paid for Pearl. With Pearl, Hester's life was one almost never filled with joy, but instead a constant nagging. Pearl would harass her mother over the scarlet "A" which she wore. Pearl would also make her own "A" to wear, and sometimes she played games with her mother's "A", trying to hit it with rocks. When Hester would go into the town with Pearl, the other children would make fun of her, and Pearl would yell and throw dirt at them. Although Hester had so much trouble with Pearl, she still felt that Pearl was her treasure. Pearl was really the only thing that Hester had in life, and if Pearl wasn't in Hester's life, Hester would never have been able to go on. Once and a while, Pearl would bring joy to Hester's life, and that helped her to keep on living. Pearl really was the scarlet letter, because if Pearl had never been born, Hester would have never been found guilty of adultery, and thus never would have had to wear that burden upon her chest. Without that burden, Hester would have led a much better life then the one she had throughout the novel. I never had to go through as much anguish as Pearl, mostly because adultery is accepted, the President has even done it. Pearl represented the scarlet letter "A", she was a kind of burden, yet love for Hester. Pearl was more then her mother's only treasure; she was her mother's only source of survival. The way that my parents love me with a never ending love, this was too placed on Pearl and Hester.

Non-Native English Speakers Teaching English

Non-Native English Speakers Teaching English An extremely active discussion on a LinkedIn professional group called English Language Services Professionals has caught my interest. This group is one of the most active English teaching groups on the Internet, with almost 13,000 members. Heres the question that begins the discussion: Ive been looking for a teaching opportunity for two years and Im sick of the typical Native speakers only phrase. Why do they allow TEFL certificates for non-natives then? This is a discussion that needs to be had in the world of English teaching. I have my own opinion on the matter, but lets first start off with a quick overview of the current situation in the English teaching world. To be very general, as well as to oversimplify the discussion, lets admit that there is a perception by some that native speakers of English are better English teachers. Arguments Against Non-Native Speakers as English Teachers This idea that only non-native speakers of English need not apply for English teaching jobs comes from a number of arguments: Native speakers provide accurate pronunciation models for learners.Native speakers innately understand the intricacies of idiomatic English usage.Native speakers can provide conversational opportunities in English that more closely mirror conversations that learners can expect to have with other English speakers.Native speakers understand native English speaking cultures and can provide insight that non-native speakers can not.Native speakers speak English as it is actually spoken in English speaking countries.Students and students parents prefer native speakers. Arguments for Non-Native Speakers as English Teachers Here are some counterarguments to the points above: Pronunciation models: Non-native English speakers can provide a model of English as the lingua franca, and will have studied correct pronunciation models.Idiomatic English: While many learners would like to speak idiomatic English, the fact is that most of the English conversation they will have and should have will be in non-idiomatic standard English.Typical native speaker conversations: Most English learners will be using their English to discuss business, holidays, etc. with OTHER non-native English speakers for the majority of the time. Only true English as a second language students (i.e. those living or wanting to live in English speaking countries) might reasonably expect to spend most of their time speaking English with native English speakers.English speaking cultures: Once again, most English learners will be communicating with people from a wide variety of cultures in English, that doesnt mean that UK, Australian, Canadian, or US culture will be the main topic of conversa tion. Native speakers use real-world English: This is perhaps of importance only to English as a Second Language learners, rather than English as a foreign  language learners.Students and students parents prefer native English speakers: This is more difficult to debate. This is purely a marketing decision made by the schools. The only way to change this fact would be to market English classes differently. The Reality Of Non-Native English Speakers Teaching English I can imagine that a number of readers might also realize one important fact: State school teachers are overwhelmingly non-native English speakers in non-native English speaking countries. In other words, for many this is a non-issue: Non-native English speakers already teach English in state schools, so there are plenty of teaching opportunities. However, the perception remains that, in the private sector, native English speakers are preferred in most cases. My Opinion This is a complex issue, and having benefited from the fact that I am a native speaker I admit to having had an advantage for certain teaching jobs throughout my life. On the other hand, I have never had access to some of the cushier state teaching jobs available. To be blunt, state teaching jobs offer much more security, generally better pay and infinitely better benefits. However, I can also understand the frustration of non-native English speakers who have gained mastery of English, and who can help students in their own native language. I think there are a few criteria for making a hiring decision, and I offer these for your consideration. The native / non-native teacher decision should be based on students needs analysis. Are the learners going to need to speak English in native English speaking countries?Qualifications must be considered: Just Speaking English doesnt make a teacher qualified. Teachers need to be judged on their qualifications and experience.Non-native speakers have a distinct edge for teaching lower level students as they can explain difficult grammar points in learners native tongue with great accuracy. The perception of native speakers is best seems antiquated in the global English speaking environment. Perhaps it is time for private schools to revisit their marketing strategies.Native speakers do have the edge when it comes to idiomatic language skills. Imagine an English learner is going to move to the US to work in a company, a native English speaker with a bit of knowledge about that industry will be able to quickly latch on to idiomatic language, as well as jargon that the student will need. Please take advantage of the opportunity to express your own opinion. This is an important discussion, that everyone can learn from: teachers, both native and non-native speakers, private institutes that feel the have to hire native speakers, and, perhaps most importantly, students.
